Neck & Spinal Orthoses

What Are Cervical Thoracic Orthoses?

Cervical Thoracic Orthoses

A cervical thoracic orthosis brace is a specialized device designed to provide comprehensive support and stability to both the neck and upper back. It is commonly prescribed to limit movement, protect the spine during healing, and alleviate pain resulting from fractures, post-surgical recovery, or degenerative conditions. The CTO consists of two main components: a front section with a plastic mandibular support that connects to a chest piece, and a back section with an occipital support that attaches to the back of the vest. This design ensures immobilization of the entire upper spinal column.

Finding the Proper Fit and Comfort of Your CTO Orthosis

The front part of the CTO rests beneath the chin and across the chest, while the back panel extends from the base of the skull down to the shoulders. These two pieces are secured with velcro straps to fully enclose and support your neck. To receive the maximum benefit from your CTO, be sure to wear the cervical collar component correctly.

Be cautious not to over-tighten the collar, as this can cause breathing difficulties and discomfort. The fit should be snug without causing excess pressure. Daily skin checks are important to prevent breakdown from prolonged wear. On the other hand, if the collar is too loose, it may result in the chin slipping down into the brace which means that it wasn’t secured tightly enough.

For your safety and optimal recovery, contact us if you notice:

  • Any damage to the CTO
  • Skin issues where the device touches your body
  • Need for pad replacements
  • Changes in how the CTO fits
  • New sensations or weakness in your limbs
  • Unexpected swallowing or vision problems

Our Process
  • Stage 1: Comprehensive Assessment

We explain the benefits of different cervical collars and thoracic support options to help you feel confident in your choice.

  • Stage 2: Precise Measurement and Customization

We take detailed measurements of your upper chest, rib cage, and thoracic spine to create a brace that provides maximum support and comfort. Using advanced technology, we customize your CTO to fit your body perfectly.

  • Stage 3: Quality Fabrication

Your custom CTO orthosis is fabricated using high-quality materials, designed to stabilize both the cervical and thoracic regions. We keep you informed about the fabrication process and the expected timeline for completion.

  • Stage 4: Personalized Fitting and Adjustments

FAQ

  • How should you clean your brace daily?

Maintain your CTO's cleanliness using a soft, slightly damp cloth with mild soap daily. For CTOs with fabric components, make sure it’s thoroughly air-dried or use a cool air source to prevent moisture buildup.

  • What precautions should you take when walking with your brace on?

Your CTO may limit your field of vision and restrict movement. Move cautiously, especially when navigating uneven surfaces or changes in elevation. It’s important to adjust to walking with your brace before attempting more challenging terrains.

  • How can you apply ice to relieve pain while wearing the brace?

To address pain while wearing your CTO, consider using cold therapy. Using a thin fabric layer, create a barrier between your skin and a cold pack. Apply this to the affected area before securing your CTO in place.

  • How do I correctly put on a CTO brace while lying down?

To put on a CTO brace while lying down, it’s helpful to have a caregiver or a mirror to check the fit. Start by making sure your neck and upper back are dry. Place the back section of the brace under your neck and upper back, with the foam side against your skin, and align yourself on the bed. Your head, neck, and shoulders should be fully supported.

Next, slide the front panel up from your chest and position it under your chin, making sure it’s centered. Attach the side straps one at a time, with your chin resting comfortably on the chin support. Then, secure the waist straps until they click into place. Once you’re sitting up, adjust the straps for a snug fit. Make sure your hair is out of the way, over the back of the collar. To remove the brace, unclip the waist straps first, then gently release one side of the neck portion and slide out the back panel.
