Understanding High Arches

High arches, or "pes cavus," are identified by a pronounced arch that doesn’t make contact with the ground when standing flat-footed. This condition can lead to extra stress on the heel and forefoot.

Performing a wet footprint test will reveal a unique pattern: impressions are made only by the heel and forefoot, with the arch area remaining untouched, illustrating why high arches are often called "hollow foot." Those with high arches typically find that they bear weight on the outer (lateral) edges of their feet, which can result in a range of foot health issues that need specialized support.

What Causes High Arches?

High arches may be congenital or develop over time due to a range of factors. It’s important to recognize the cause for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.‍

Genetic Influences

High arches often run in families, indicating a genetic predisposition. This trait can commonly be seen across several family members.

Neurological and Muscular Disorders

High arches can also stem from neuromuscular or neurological conditions, including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, polio, and stroke. In these instances, the arches are typically stiff and inflexible and may deteriorate over time.

What Types of Pain Can High Arches Cause?

In many cases, high arches result in a range of discomforts throughout the body due to increased stress on the midfoot bones. This stress concentrates weight on the forefoot, potentially causing foot pain during activities like standing, walking, or running, and this discomfort can spread to the ankle, knee, hip, and back.

  • High arches may also lead to issues such as:

    • Pain in the foot
    • Heel pain
    • Plantar fasciitis
    • Arch pain
    • Corns and calluses on the ball, side of the foot, or heel
    • Hammertoes
    • Stiffness and inflexibility in the arch
    • Tightness in the lower calf muscles

  • Individuals with high arches are prone to supination, or underpronation, where the arches do not effectively absorb shock, and the foot fails to roll inward adequately upon impact.

This can result in undue stress on the outer parts of the foot, leading to various complications, including:

    • Pain along the iliotibial (IT) band
    • Knee discomfort
    • Achilles tendonitis
    • In cases of severe supination, there may be risks of inversion ankle sprains, heel spurs, and stress fractures

Types of Insoles for High Arches

Choosing the right high-arch orthotics can significantly improve comfort and alleviate pain. Here are the two main types:

Designed for those with higher arches, these insoles offer aggressive arch support to provide firm and robust support. They are ideal for individuals who need maximum stability and correction.

These insoles provide a softer and more flexible solution, so they’re a great starting point if you're unsure which shoe inserts for high arches are right for you. They provide adequate support while allowing for some flexibility and comfort.

Benefits of High Arch Foot Support

There are countless benefits of having proper high arch support that enhance comfort and overall foot health.
Here are some key advantages:

  • Even Weight Distribution:
Helps in evenly distributing body weight across the foot and reduces pressure points and the risk of injuries.

  • Heel Stabilization: Provides stabilization of the heel, improving balance and preventing excessive foot movement.

  • Shock Absorption: Cushions the impact of walking, running, or jumping and protect the feet from stress and strain.

  • Enhanced Alignment: Supports proper alignment of the knees, hips, and back, alleviating pain and discomfort throughout the kinetic chain.

  • Prevention of Foot Conditions: Helps prevent common foot conditions by providing adequate support and pressure relief.
