What Is a Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (KAFO)?

A KAFO leg brace is a type of orthosis or full-leg splint that covers the knee, ankle, and foot joints. It compensates for muscle weakness, paralysis, or skeletal problems that lead to lower limb instability.

KAFO braces make standing and walking easier by controlling instability, preventing excessive motion, improving alignment, and reducing joint pain.

At PrimeCare, we provide patients with customized KAFOs based on detailed examinations and assessments. As such, every KAFO brace is tailored for maximum comfort and functionality.

Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis Types in New Mexico

At PrimeCare, we offer the following types of knee-ankle-foot orthosis:

Suitable for patients unable to stabilize their knees, these types of KAFOs lock at the knee while standing or weight-bearing yet unlock while walking, enabling a more natural gait.

Instead of unlocking or locking, free-swinging KAFOs rely on the patient's weight to fall in front of the hinge, keeping the hinge (and, therefore, the leg) straight.

These computer-controlled lower limb KAFOs adapt their functions to provide variable resistance to simulate the leg muscles' function, namely the quadriceps.

Pediatric DAFO_KAFO

For younger patients, a pediatric KAFO brace provides four-point correction through the full range of knee motion, simplifying straightening adjustment and increasing knee stability.

Common Conditions for Knee-Ankle-Foot-Orthosis

We are experienced in providing solutions for the following KAFO indications:

  • Neurological conditions such as strokes, polio, brain, and spinal cord injury, motor neuron disease, and multiple sclerosis.

  • Physical conditions or deficiencies like general weakness, muscular dystrophy, knee hyperextension, foot drop, progressive deformity, and other skeletal misalignments.

  • Peripheral nerve injuries cause degrees of paralysis in the lower limbs due to dramatic injuries or failed surgeries.

KAFO Material Solutions

As a leading KAFO orthosis supplier, we offer three types of KAFO braces made from plastic, metal, and composite materials:

Thermoplastic Knee-Ankle-Foot-Orthosis

A plastic KAFO is custom-made by molding heated plastic (thermoplastics) to a modified leg replica or a scanned 3D impression. These are lighter and more cosmetically appealing than metal ones.

Conventional KAFO

A conventional KAFO orthosis is custom-made from a cast or tracing of the leg. These devices are constructed with metal and leather and attach directly to a shoe with stirrups.

Carbon Graphite KAFO

This design is aesthetically pleasing and lighter than thermoplastic or conventional KAFO. By design, carbon graphite offers a better energy return to the patient during the gait cycle.
