How We Work
- Stage 1: Initial Appointment
During your initial appointment at the clinic, you’ll meet your prosthetists who will go over your medical history and talk about your goals. At this point, your prosthetist will also take your specific measurements to fabricate your device and coordinate it with your insurance agency for approval, a timeline that takes about one week.
- Stage 2: Insurance Approval & Prosthetic Fabrication
As soon as we have your insurance approval, we’ll send your specs to our world-class prosthetics providers. We carefully choose each prosthetic part for every patient to maximize your comfort and accommodate your unique patient care needs. On average, once the components arrive, it takes roughly 2-3 days to make the prosthetic.
- Stage 3: Socket Fabrication & Fitting
A fitting appointment at the clinic is then scheduled where your prosthetist will assemble your direct socket system for the proper fit. Other socket fabrication services take anywhere from 2-6 weeks, however, our Ossur socket system only requires 2 hours to build. You’ll receive your socket and prosthetics on the same day.
- Stage 4: Monitoring Your OPS Pro App
For first-time amputees, we’ll fit them with temporary prosthetics for a period of 3-12 months. Once we have carefully monitored and evaluated how this fits, we will move forward with definitive solutions that are tailored to your condition and lifestyle.
- Stage 5: The Arrival of Your Definitive Prosthesis
Once you’ve found success with your preparatory prosthetic device, we’ll analyze the information from the tracking app to get more information on how the patient moves. This allows us to develop a final prosthesis on an individual basis. Rest assured that all of the small details are factored in to ensure the perfect fit.
- Stage 6: Establishing Your Routine
Moving forward with recovery often involves gaining momentum and adjusting to your new lifestyle. Your residual limb will continue to heal internally for a few weeks and you’ll use your first few months as an amputee to determine your specific lifestyle needs.
- Stage 7: Full Adaptation
You’ll develop a stronger sense of personal identity throughout the healing process and your sense of accomplishment will grow. Regardless of your goals, we are here to help you achieve them however we can. There’s no limit to what you can achieve!

FAQ
How long do prosthetics last?
Prosthetics can last between several months to several years, depending on your age, activity level, and growth. Bear in mind a residual limb may shrink during the initial rehabilitation phases and require a new socket, liners, and occasionally a different device.
How much does a prosthesis cost in New Mexico?
Prosthetic legs range from $5,000 to $60,000. However, it’s important to know that most are only built to withstand between three and five years of normal wear and tear. Prosthetics have to be replaced over a lifetime and are never a one-off cost.
Are prosthetics services covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans cover prosthetics to a certain degree, but often not the entire bill. Of course, this depends on your situation and the type of coverage you have. Learn more information about billing & insurance here.
