Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (TLSO) in New Mexico

What Is a TLSO?

A Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (TLSO) is a specialized spinal brace that supports and stabilizes the spine from the thoracic area through the lumbar region down to the sacrum. This medical device limits harmful movements while maintaining proper spinal alignment to help patients recover after surgeries or from various back conditions.

MCL/LCL Knee Braces

TLSO combines two custom-molded plastic shells with strategic padding. The brace features a front and back panel designed to match your unique body shape, with comfortable foam lining and breathable fabric covering. It has an innovative strapping system that uses both primary support and tension straps that allow precise adjustments for optimal compression and stability during daily wear.

Managing Spinal Conditions with TLSO

Here's how this specialized orthosis helps manage different conditions:

Spinal Fractures

Compression fractures and other spinal fractures, whether sustained from major trauma or osteoporosis, often need TLSO bracing to stabilize the spine during the healing process. The brace prevents further injury by limiting movement and providing consistent support throughout recovery.

Scoliosis

For patients with scoliosis, a TLSO helps maintain proper spinal alignment and can prevent curve progression. The brace is especially effective for adolescents who are still growing as it provides structural support to guide proper spinal development.

Post-Surgical Support

After spinal surgery, whether for herniated discs or other conditions, a TLSO brace helps maintain surgical corrections and support healing tissues. The brace limits movement during the critical healing period which reduces the risk of complications.

Spinal Stenosis and Chronic Conditions

For patients with chronic conditions like spinal stenosis, a TLSO can provide pain relief and stability during daily activities. The brace helps maintain good posture and reduces stress on compressed nerves.

How Long Should You Use the TLSO Brace?

How long the brace is needed varies depending on your specific condition and healing progress. Most patients wear their brace for 6-12 weeks, though some conditions may require longer use. Initially, you'll wear the brace whenever you are upright or active, typically 12-16 hours daily. As you heal, your doctor will gradually reduce wearing time to help your muscles remain strong and active.

How to Put on Your TLSO Brace

You must apply your TLSO orthosis properly in order for it to be effective, but there is more than one way to do this. The method you'll use depends on your specific condition and mobility level. While some patients can manage this process independently, others may need help initially. Our team has outlined detailed approaches for different situations:

  • Lying Position Method

    1. Start by lying flat with your knees bent.
    2. Position the back panel centrally.
    3. Roll to secure the front panel.
    4. Adjust the shoulder straps first.
    5. Tighten the waist straps for a secure fit.
  • Sitting Position Method

    1. Sit on a firm surface.
    2. Place the back panel against the spine.
    3. Wrap the front panel around your body.
    4. Secure all straps systematically.
    5. Check for alignment and comfort.
  • Standing Method with Assistance

    1. Have someone help you position the back panel.
    2. Hold the brace while securing the front.
    3. Adjust all straps evenly.
    4. Ensure proper alignment.
    5. Check for fit and comfort.

Removing Your TLSO

To remove the brace safely, loosen all straps first. Then, remove the front panel while keeping your spine aligned. If needed, get assistance to remove the back panel while keeping your spine straight. Remember to always remove the brace while lying down or sitting if your healthcare provider instructs you to do so.

Crafting Your Custom TLSO: Our Advanced Process

At PrimeCare, creating your TLSO involves much more than simple measurements and assembly. Every patient is unique and we use a sophisticated, multi-stage process that combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to ensure you get the right solution. Here’s what you can expect:
assembling a prosthetic leg by a technician.
  • Comprehensive Evaluation

Our certified specialists begin with a thorough assessment of your condition where we’ll review your medical history and imaging results. We evaluate your mobility patterns, lifestyle requirements, and specific treatment goals. This initial consultation includes detailed measurements and anatomical landmark mapping to ensure optimal brace design.

  • Digital Precision Scanning

Using state-of-the-art scanning technology, we create an exact digital model of your torso. This advanced imaging captures every contour and asymmetry, allowing for unprecedented accuracy in brace design. The digital model enables us to analyze optimal pressure points and relief areas before we start fabrication.

  • Custom Modification and Material Selection

Based on the digital model, we select and modify medical-grade thermoplastics specifically suited to your needs. Our orthotists carefully consider factors like flexibility requirements, weight restrictions, and climate conditions when we’re choosing materials. Each component is precision-cut and heat-molded to match your exact specifications.

  • Component Integration and Assembly

The assembly phase brings together all the custom elements of your TLSO. Our technicians integrate the rigid panels with high-density foam padding and moisture-wicking liner materials. We carefully position and secure the strapping systems to ensure the mechanical components like tension pulleys or adjustment mechanisms are working smoothly.

  • Quality Control and Initial Fitting

Rest assured that every TLSO undergoes rigorous quality inspection before fitting. We verify structural integrity, check all mechanical components, and ensure that all edges and contact points are smooth. During your fitting, our orthotists make precise adjustments to guarantee optimal alignment and pressure distribution.

FAQ

  • How do I clean my TLSO brace?

We suggest that you maintain the interior by wiping it daily with a slightly damp cloth, being particularly thorough in areas that contact your skin directly. Regular cleaning helps prevent skin irritation and odor development.
For deeper sanitizing, use rubbing alcohol on the inside surfaces once per week. The outer shell can be cleaned with mild soap and water as needed. For the straps, gently brush away any debris and allow them to air dry. Never use harsh chemicals or excessive water that could damage the brace materials.

  • Can I sleep with my TLSO brace?

Unless specifically directed by your healthcare provider, remove your brace during sleep to allow skin recovery and prevent pressure points from developing. However, it's essential to reapply your brace before you get out of bed in the morning or during nighttime bathroom visits. For certain spinal conditions, your doctor might recommend nighttime bracing - always follow their specific instructions for your treatment protocol.

  • How do I bathe while using a TLSO?

For patients who need to wear the TLSO whenever standing or sitting, there are two bathing options. You can take sponge baths while lying in bed with the brace removed, or shower while wearing the brace. In either case, you'll need to clean underneath the brace while you’re lying down. If you shower, lie down afterward to sponge bathe the skin under the brace. Be sure to avoid any twisting or bending motions while the brace is off.
Once you've cleaned and thoroughly dried both your skin and the brace's interior, reapply the TLSO before you sit up or stand. If the straps get wet during showering, you can either let them air dry while wearing the brace or use a hair dryer on a low setting.

  • How tight should my TLSO be?

Your TLSO should be snug but not restrictive. You should be able to slide two fingers beneath the straps and edges. The brace shouldn't restrict breathing or cause numbness, tingling, or sharp pain. If you notice red marks lasting more than 20 minutes after removal or experience any discomfort, contact your orthotist for adjustment. We are always happy to help!

  • What activities can I perform while wearing the TLSO?

Your TLSO allows you to maintain many regular daily activities, with some important restrictions. Avoid movements that stress your spine, such as heavy lifting (nothing over 10 pounds), sudden twisting, or extensive bending. You'll need to adapt to certain tasks - for example, using a reaching tool for picking up items from the floor or getting help with lower body dressing. Your orthotist at PrimeCare will demonstrate safe movement techniques specific to your condition and lifestyle needs.

  • What should I wear under my TLSO?

Wear a close-fitting, moisture-wicking t-shirt or tank top under your brace. The garment should be wrinkle-free and long enough to extend beyond the brace edges. While we provide specialized shirts designed for use with braces, any snug-fitting cotton shirt can work. Change your undergarment daily and whenever it becomes damp with perspiration.
