Understanding Wrist Amputation

The wrist, also known as the radiocarpal joint, is an ellipsoid synovial joint formed by two rows of carpal bones that link the forearm to the hand. These carpal bones are coated with articular cartilage, which enables smooth, gliding movements. The wrist can move in different ways, including flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction. However, conditions including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, injuries, or infections can harm this cartilage, resulting in pain, stiffness, and swelling as the wrist bones rub against each other.

socket crafting

Wrist joint replacement is a surgical procedure that includes the removal of the radius and ulna up to the styloid processes. This results in a bulbous stump that allows for prosthetic attachment. This method enables the elbow to remain free, preserving full pronation and supination. By retaining the distal radio-ulnar joint, wrist disarticulation improves forearm rotation and dramatically enhances prosthetic suspension because of the distal radial flare.

Wrist disarticulation refers to the medical condition where all hand structures are absent, either due to a congenital limb difference or as a result of amputation.

Functionality of Wrist Prosthetics

What Is AFO

Artificial wrist prosthetic components typically include a socket that interfaces with different terminal devices, such as hands or hooks, often requiring adapters and connectors for compatibility. The addition of high-definition silicone gloves can effectively conceal the entire prosthetic system for a more natural appearance that blends seamlessly with the user's body. It enhances both aesthetic appeal and functionality in daily activities.
