Jessie: Gaining Independence After Below-Knee Amputation

Prosthetics

Jessie Martinez was always active before his amputation. A painter of murals, Jessie spent his days working hard, walking to his jobs, and riding his bike around town.

On August 10th, 2020, he suddenly lost feeling in his left leg due to a blood clot, which eventually spread to his other leg. By October 5th, 2020, amputation became unavoidable.

Despite the challenges, Jessie was determined to regain his independence and return to the activities he loved.

A New Start at PrimeCare

At PrimeCare, Jessie was fitted with a custom below-knee prosthesis with a vacuum and lock system. This modern prosthetic technology ensured a secure fit, allowing for improved mobility and comfort.

“The first time wearing the prosthesis, I was excited and ready to live a normal life again.”

What surprised Jessie the most was how quickly he adjusted. “I was able to adjust to it like it was ‘nothing’,” he says.

Rebuilding Independence and Confidence

Jessie’s first major milestone was being able to walk and take care of himself again. He quickly regained confidence, enjoying activities like drawing and playing with his nephews. Two years after receiving his prosthesis, he proudly traveled to LA Beach and walked on his own.

Before his prosthesis, Jessie feared being stuck in a wheelchair forever. But once he had his custom below-knee prosthetic, he regained independence.

"I realized being in a wheelchair isn’t where I want to be. I’m not a failure — I never gave up.”

What Makes PrimeCare Different

Jessie describes his experience at PrimeCare as “the greatest.” He feels supported by a team of staff who are genuinely caring and dedicated to helping him regain independence.

“The staff is worth coming here. They make you feel comfortable and cared for.”

For anyone facing a similar journey, Jessie’s message is clear:

“Don’t give up. With the right prosthesis and the right team, you can get your life back.”
