The Origins and Significance of International P&O Day

International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day Explained

International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day, first established in 2022 and observed annually on November 5th, was created by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO). This is a global non-profit organization founded in 1970 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This observance aims to highlight and raise awareness about the importance of equitable and appropriate access to prosthetic and orthotic services worldwide, from advanced upper-limb and lower-limb prosthetics to essential AFOs and KAFOs.

The 2024 theme, "Personnel – Enabling and Empowering Mobility," celebrates the diverse healthcare professionals who make comprehensive care possible. The first International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day emerged as a pivotal platform to address crucial challenges in the field, including the need for more trained professionals, better access to affordable devices, and improved healthcare infrastructure in remote areas. The ultimate goal is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live independently and with dignity through access to quality prostheses and orthoses.

How You Can Participate and Make a Difference

Every voice and action matters in promoting better access to prosthetic and orthotic services. Whether you use a prosthetic arm or a spinal orthosis, here are meaningful ways to get involved on International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day on November 5th:

Share Your Journey

Tell your story of living with prosthetics or orthotics, or share how these devices have impacted your loved one's life. Share practical tips about daily activities, like winter safety with prosthetics or driving with assistive devices. Your experiences can help inspire others facing similar challenges.

Connect and Support

Join local support groups or online communities where users share experiences and resources to ensure equitable access to knowledge. Connect with others who share similar experiences – whether it's adapting to a new above-knee prosthesis or learning to navigate life with orthotics. You can also consider joining various International Day of Persons with Disabilities events this December to expand your support network.

Advocate for Change

Get involved with ISPO's 2024 awareness campaign using their social media toolkit and hashtags. Share information about important topics like prosthetics insurance coverage or returning to work after amputation. Help highlight and raise awareness about barriers many users face in accessing appropriate prosthetic and orthotic care.

Learn and Grow

Attend workshops and events to learn about new developments that enhance independence. Explore resources about prosthetic care and maintenance or discover adaptive sports opportunities. Share this knowledge with others who might benefit from prosthetic and orthotic services.

These collective efforts will help build a future where prosthetic and orthotic services are available to all who need them, from remote communities to urban centers, ensuring everyone has access to life-changing mobility solutions.
